Our slump has now entered double digit days. Today was the tenth in a row with unusually slow fishing. The news is not all bad as there are a lot of fish on the graph, if not in the box. The other piece of good news is the diligent are seeing some rewards. Among the few fish that are being caught, there have been some real trophies. The kings are huge and fish over twenty pounds are not as rare as they have been the past several years. You just have to be willing to enjoy a nice boat ride to have your shot.
For now, spread your baits out and cover all the bases. Run some high lines for rainbows. Keep some orange in mid ranges around the thermocline for coho, and run some bigger stuff down near the bottom for the kings that are here. Fish are making appearances on the graph from 50 to 150 feet of water, but concentrations are hard to find. Just need to keep running baits in there until the fish decide they are hungry again.
The Lion’s club fishing derby is next Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are locally available, or call the club for more information.

Every year we have a part of the season which calls to question whether we have caught all the fish. The very slow fishing has everyone proposing theories. I have spoken with captains who have fished these waters for more than 40 years and they will tell you, your guess is as good as anyone’s. Is it a late transition, low chinoook numbers, unfavorable stretch of weather, dominant coho? Only time will tell. All we can do is keep on fishing and wait for a change. It can happen today, tomorrow, or next week.
A few guys have explored the deeps in 300 to 400+ feet of water, but are only finding rainbows and an occasional nomad king. There has been colder water below the surface with 48 degree water just 30 feet down yesterday so there is some favorable water out there. Just need to keep running baits in there until the fish decide they are hungry again. Many that have been caught recently have curled up tails indicating they have spent a lot of time laying on the bottom.
The club’s annual picnic is this Sunday July 24th. Attendance is free to club members and there is a nominal fee for non-members. Considering the fish contest, food and company, the fee is more than worth the entertainment. Please call Al Larson at 262-339-4292 to RSVP. They need to know how much food to have at the picnic.

Fish Day is this Saturday and the marina will not be open for launches until late in the morning on Sunday. This will limit the fishing opportunities in Port to people with slipped boats or shore fisherman.
The water has warmed considerably over the past few days which is driving fish out to deeper water. The morning is still good in 60 to 80, but the bite seems to move out to 100 plus quickly after sunrise. Coho and rainbows still dominate the catch, but kings are present among them. The king numbers still seem low, but it is hard to tell what we have until the cohos move on. It could be a big mistake to wish for that.
Shallow running stuff is not doing so well with the warmer water. Weapons are replacing shallow running birds but are still being run in the top 50 feet of water for best results. The best baits have been bullfrog and little boy blue behind a white or blue bubble flasher. Run riggers from 35 feet down to the bottom for kings. Keep the rainbows in play with one or two shallow runners if you have the rods.

Fishing continued to be good this week, but slowed considerably today. The fish have been hanging inside of 100 feet for the most part and all the pressure is having an affect. The lack of wind and clear skies have also warmed the water considerably and that is contributing as well. The good news is there is still lots of bait and lots of fish everywhere you go. You can go out to 200 feet and find less pressured fish and less traffic. Reports have some in from 20 feet to 150 and all told of spotty fishing. Orange double-os and birds are still good for coho and rainbow and kings are being caught on riggers. Richard’s blue green gold is still tops on boards and bullfrog is the best on riggers. Shake things up with a grasshopper fly on a dipsey for an aggressive rainbow bite.
The Great Lakes Sport Fishing Club of Ozaukee county goes head to head with Sheboygan’s club this Sunday. Of course we all know the fishing and the fisherman are better here, and while we are a humble bunch, sometimes we need to remind our neighbors to the north or they start to get big heads and mouths. Take em down oh wizards from Oz.

Overall a great weekend for weather and fishing. I trust everyone managed the fog safely on Saturday. Please be careful in those conditions. I watched a parade of small boats follow another small boat right into the break wall. I don’t think anyone hit, but it had to be close. If you can’t see and you don’t have radar, consider at least waiting for daylight. It’s just a fishing derby.
I am not generally one to call north or south, in part because it does not usually matter, but when it does, it can change in a day. That was the scenario this weekend. Strong currents have fish seeking current seams and slack water for bait. Last week those seams extended south of the gap and this weekend the fishing seemed better to the north. Most fish have been inside of 200 feet of water. I made a run out deep and found a blank sonar screen on Sunday. Fish are in 60 to 100 feet very early and the bite moves out to 100 to 160 l when the sun gets higher. Yellow birds and deep downriggers are most active in high sun. Dipseys, weapons and shallow riggers were best at dawn and dusk. Coho are still around but rainbows have been much more scarce. Big kings are coming in regularly with many fish topping 20 pounds this weekend. Blue green gold and blue pearl were our best bird baits. Fruit punch is coming on as bait gets a little bigger and water gets warmer. Bullfrog is again a fish killer on the riggers this year.

What a great week of fishing and weather. King salmon have arrived and the coho are still here in good numbers. If that isn’t enough, big rainbow have been mixed in with the whole lot. Most people have been fishing to the south from 80 feet of water to 200 and finding pockets of kings and coho. Usually, where there is one bite, there are three or four. Riggers down 25 to 95 feet have taken some of everything and the orange double –o’s on dipseys and birds are great for coho and rainbows on the surface. With the kings being here, a set of weapons is a good bet as well. Bullfrog is again the strongest presentation deeper and Richard’s blue green gold is tops for the top 20 feet. If anyone is running spoons or plugs for fish, I haven’t heard about it. But spoon guys are loyal and I’m left to leave you with your best guess for the big derby.
The Great Lakes Sport Fishing Club’s fishing derby begins this Saturday and runs through Monday. Entries are available in advance through the club or at the derby throughout the weekend. Come on out and try your luck. Meet hundreds of fellow fisherman and enjoy good food and company at the derby tent.

And then there were kings…It makes me wonder about the aggressive nature of coho salmon and perhaps their dominance over king salmon. Of course the king are the biggest fish in the pond, but it is a rare day when a king will hit a bait right before your eyes as you are running it back out, 30 feet behind the boat. The coho may, by their numbers and aggressive nature, be the dominant species of salmon. These fish all compete for the same food source and it just seems that while the coho are here in numbers, the kings are hard to come by. When the coho numbers thin, the kings are there and ready to eat. Food for thought anyway.
Good fishing continued over the weekend and yesterday. Reports this morning are pretty grim, but we were due for a clunker, I guess. Kings are being caught in 80 to 200 feet of water along with a nice mix of big coho and rainbows. Downriggers 40 to 100 feet down and weapons are taking kings. Keep some birds out and at least one dipsey on a short lead for the big cohos that don’t want to leave yet. Kings love bullfrog again this year and green mirage has been a notable as well. Richards blue green gold peanut fly and pearl blue have been tops hitters for coho and rainbow.

After an awesome Saturday, the fishing returned to a more normal state during the week. Catches were still in double digits, but only charters with one or two people were in early with limits. Water temps are rising into the 50’s and that may mean the coho will be moving on soon. We boated a 10 pounder today and there have been reports of bigger coho than that. The ones that remain are eating their way to a trophy size and weight.
Mysteriously absent are the kings. We have had a few in the mix, but no numbers. A few boats have been running king setups early in the morning and again the evening without much success. Lets hope the coho are around until the kings show up. The warmer water should bring them, but the transition could mean some slow fishing.
Peanut flies behind orange dodgers remain the best option. Richard’s Blue Green Gold, blue pearl, and green aqua have all been good. Purple has had some great days including today but are not consistent. Rainbows have been in the mix with consistency and coming up on dodger flies, but you might try your favorite rainbow spoon on a high line for some leaping fish excitement.

After an awesome Saturday, the fishing returned to a more normal state on Sunday and Monday. Catches were still in double digits, but only charters with one or two people were in early with limits. Cool air, clouds and fog have been keeping the water temps down which is holding the fish here, but whether or not we will return to limits of coho in short trips is yet to be seen.
Mysteriously absent are the kings. We have had a few in the mix, but no numbers. A few boats have been running king setups early in the morning without much success. The later coho bite has bailed them out from an otherwise slow trip. Reports from up north where the coho don’t roam are that there are no fish to be caught. Areas like Algoma, Kewaunee, and Two Rivers rely on king salmon and they are not finding them. I guess we can only hope they are late and will be here before the coho leave.
Peanut flies behind orange dodgers remain the best option. Richard’s Blue Green Gold, blue pearl, and green aqua have all been good. Rainbows have been in the mix with consistency and coming up on dodger flies, but you might try your favorite rainbow spoon on a high line for some leaping fish excitement.

Still biting. The blow yesterday moved the coho in to 150 to 250 feet of water. Bites are coming from the top down to 120 feet on birds, dipseys, weapons and riggers. A few nice rainbow have been in the mix as well, but kings are mysteriously absent. Orange double-O’s trailed by Richard’s blue green gold peanut fly remain the best choice. Blue pearl or green aqua are also very good. Bullfrog is taking coho on riggers and 50 – 55 feet has been a very good depth. If you are capable of getting tweets on your phone, this would be a great weekend to start. I am running trips all day every day through Monday and face time with the computer is going to be tough to come by. Adjustments to location and presentation may be needed and I may not be able to report them until Tuesday. If not you, bring a geek or the neighbor kid with you this weekend.
