Fishing Report - June 3rd

After an outstanding Memorial Day weekend, the boat landing has been pretty quiet all week. A few charters went out this week and reported tough fishing around the low pressure front that come through Wednesday.
What we do know is there are still a lot of fish out there in the 60 to 120 foot range and they are hanging around a lot of bait. One private boater started fishing early Wednesday morning and was about to pull lines and give up on a slow day when the fish turned on around 8:30.
While I don’t have any other new information for today’s report, I can offer a tip from the captain. When working tough fish, play around with your speed. Don’t be afraid to drop it into the neutral for 5 to 10 seconds to let your baits drop. Putting the boat back in gear will create the appearance of fleeing baitfish and can trigger strikes from neutral or negative fish. Start a few fish feeding and others within a school will follow suit instead of missing out on eating opportunities.

Fishing Report - May 30th

Another great day on the water. The fishing was a little tougher this morning with many people coming in with light coolers. However, some managed to find some magic and did well. Many are working the 60 to 70 feet of water in low light with some success. As the sun gets higher, moving out to 100 to 180 has been best.
Not much change in the best of baits. White flashers, either glow or fish scale, have been good down 70 or more with bullfrog, green crinkle or aqua flies. On top Richard’s Blue Green Gold or champagne is tops for coho and rainbows. Cracked ice spoons have also been taking fish on weapons or dipsey’s here and there.
The water cooled a bit today with surface temps in the upper fifties which should really help the surface bite tomorrow morning. Cooler weather should keep that going and some clouds tomorrow will slow the run to deep water. If you are out really early, don’t be afraid to work the 50 – 70 foot range or even the fish hanging in 35 to 40 feet. Those fish have been left alone for the most part so they should not be too educated yet.
A tip from the captain, if you are struggling but marking active fish, try making course adjustments of 5 to 10 degrees every 10 minutes or so. Sometimes, with strong currents as we have had, they want to see the bait behave a certain way. Angles can be critical to success.

What a beautiful weekend so far. Knock on wood it holds out, but the weather man has us enjoying this right through the weekend. Predicted southeast winds for today never found their way out of the northeast, but waves topped out at 3 feet and only so briefly today.
Fishing was great for most with fish all over from 60 feet of water out to 200 feet. The catch was finding the biters which were a bit scattered within that whole range.
Rainbows, Kings, and cohos made up mixed coolers without a dominant species for most. Most cohos and rainbows were high in the water column and caught on birds with Richard’s Champagne or Blue Green Gold flies. Kings are hitting downriggers from 70 and 110 feet down with white or green flashers and any of your favorite flies.
A tip from the captain…pay special attention to lead lengths behind the ball as this can be a critical detail. If you are limited to a few rods only, focus on getting a lot of birds out and a couple downriggers. Leadcore, dipsey’s, and weapons were spotty for many fisherman.

If I were dumped from a time machine into this week, I would have had to guess it was the end of June. Unfortunately, part of the reason I would be thinking that is the sparse coho action this week. Some hot and humid days this week have the water rapidly warming. The sun is also contributing to pushing fish out of the shallows. But, the coho is not being as well represented in the catches as we would expect from their spring migration. It’s still early and they may just be getting started. They did not arrive last year until the second week in June so no cause for panic, just a head-scratcher at this point.
The good news is the fishing has been very good despite the lack of coho. Double-digit catches continue with reports os some charters bringing in 20 – 25 fish yesterday. Most action seems to be out in the 180 to 250 range working the surface and the deeps of 100 plus feet. Lots of big kings and a great rainbow fishery are making up for the lack of coho.
I don’t have any new info on baits. Green or white flashers with bullfrog or aqua have been working deep while Richard’s blue green gold peanut fly has to be running behind an orange double-o on the surface.

As expected we had thick fog this morning which never really cleared out. Visibilities were down to under 100 yards for most of the day. Yet there were quite a few boats out there and most were rewarded with decent fishing.
The fish have concentrated some. Many were still marked from the harbor out to 60 feet this morning, but the catching was done in one of two areas from the reports I received. Many boats worked the 80 – 120 foot range and had steady bites. Others fished the 180 to 250 foot range with some success.
The fish are still being caught either down deep or at the surface without much going on in between. Bullfrog flies behind either white or green flashers continue to dominate the depths. Orange double-o’s with Richard’s blue green gold, or champagne are the hot baits for the surface behind ½ ounce to 2 ounce weights. As for spoons, anything with pinks or purples is hooking up rainbows and cohos run at the top or occasionally on a dipsey.

Fishing Report - May 21

The weather took a big turn Friday. Northeast winds early and rain have shaken the system up a little. A couple days of warm sun brought the surface temp up into the mid fifties and the northeast wind pushed that warm water down. There was one report of mid-forty degree water 90 feet down, but that is unconfirmed. Regardless, the change has brought more fish out of the depths. Reports were scarce today, but it sounds like the kings can be caught above 100 feet of water now. I am having to piece together some sparse info, but it sounds like most are still working in 90 to 180 feet of water, but the fish have been up higher. There is also a population of fish hanging in that 60 foot range, but everyone keeps going past them to get to where everyone knows there are biting fish.
As far as baits go, things have not changes from yesterday’s report. White flashers with bullfrog or aqua flies continue to be good. Near the top, orange double-o’s with Rainbow Richard’s peanut flies in blue/ green/ gold are a must-run for the cohos. With rainbows around you should definitely run a few spoons near the top 25 feet of water with some pink or purple.
They are calling for fog early tomorrow. It has not been necessary to be out early as fish have been biting most of the day. So if the fog is thick and you don’t have radar, check out a local establishment for breakfast and wait for the fog to thin out or break. Smaller boats do not necessarily show up on radar and that starts a list of potential problems that you could encounter in thick fog. Please be safe.

Fishing has been very good this week with the cohos showing up in good numbers along with some great fishing for kings and rainbows. The other great part about the fishing right now is you will find fish everywhere. Yesterday there were boats fishing from 25 feet of water out to 250 feet of water, and they were all catching.
Water temps in the low forties have fish scattered all over the water column, but there seems to be enough to go around. That said, the top twenty feet and the 80 – 120 range have been the best as far as your running depths. Again, put some baits in between or you will miss some bites.

Near the top, orange double-o’s with Rainbow Richard’s peanut flies in green/ gold are a must-run for the cohos. Spoons were a little cold yesterday, but that was the exception for the week. With rainbows around you should definitely run a few near the top 25 feet of water with some pink or purple. Throw one deep as well for big kings near the bottom or if you like the occasional laker.

Fishing Report - May 18

In case you have not heard yet, the salmon are here. Coolers are coming in with double-digit numbers including big kings, cohos, and rainbows. The graph is showing a lot of fish out there in several areas. Baitfish are piled up in the harbor which has to be bringing in fish, but I have no reports from anyone fishing the harbor. Most reports have covered the 60 foot range, the 90 – 110 range, and 150 – 200 foot range. Biting fish have been found in all these areas.
Fish are being caught in most areas of the water column as well. Riggers down 80 – 95 feet have been taking salmon both coho and kings. But, salmon and rainbows are also being taken off the surface on birds. I was out Sunday and Monday afternoons and did not have much action between 20 and 60 feet. But again, there were hits there so you should be covering that water.
Water temps were in the low forties at the surface and right at 40 degrees just 15 feet down. Lots of sun and east winds this week will likely warm the surface temps so look for the water temps to stratify as we get later in the week. This should help to narrow the depth range where you can find fish.
Orange double o’s and peanut flies up high and flasher fly combos at run deeper seem to be the strongest presentations. Spoons have been taking fish, but have been a little slower. Run your favorites and expect fish if the pattern continues. Aside from it being a little rough out, the fishing was very easy the past couple days.

A welcome sight the empty trailers in the marina parking lot. The site of people out fishing a beautiful afternoon. Not too many came in while I was there, but I was able to get something to work with for those of you who will be on the water tomorrow. I’ll be out there testing the waters myself. I am starting early to see if there is a sunrise bite. I will start shallow, but that does contradict the info I received. Reports were of cohos and kings scattered in all depths from the surface to 94 down in 100 – 140 feet of water. A few rainbows have been reported as well, though they did not all hit a cooler. A mayfly hatch was reported so make sure to run some baits up high as baitfish will be feeding on the flies as well as some rainbows.
There was also a report of a lot of fish in the 30 foot range. Those who fished them did not get any takers, but they stirred up a lot of curiosity among fisherman. I will be going to work on them in the morning and will let you know if I can get a hook into these mystery fish.
Put your favorites in the water as not report of a hot bait. Run coho and rainbow rigs as they are a safe bet. Lakers are still being caught but with salmon and rainbows around, not many are targeting lakers.

We should be talking more about fishing than weather by the next report as light winds and sunny skies are bound to bring out some fisherman. This morning the winds are strong from the west, but it is very fishable out there. They have made a change in the weather report for the weekend, but it still looks pretty decent. Winds will switch to the east northeast for Saturday, but will be light. Sunday they go east but will still be under 10 knots. This time of year an east wind can be very favorable.
There is a great plume of dirty water getting pushed out of the harbor today which provides some cover for bait. Start there if you go out today or early tomorrow. With strong west winds it may be the only warmer water you will find. Work mudlines along the shore and if nothing is doing there, work your way out to the 50 – 60 foot range.
